Car phone holders are used to place a mobile phone in a visible location in the car.
This allows you to safely use it for navigation or hands-free calls without worrying about dropping your phone. At the same time, it enables you to fully concentrate on driving.
A phone holder should be positioned in the car where it is easily visible but does not obstruct your view. For this reason, a wide range of car phone holders is available on the market, featuring various mounting methods. Most car phone holders are made of plastic. If higher stability and a sturdier structure are required, plastic is often reinforced with metal elements.
Types of Phone Holders by Placement
The four most common locations for a car phone holder are:
Phone holder for air vents – This is the most popular placement method. It provides a clear view of the device while driving and does not obstruct your vision. However, it has a few drawbacks. In winter, when heating is on, the phone may overheat due to hot air from the vents. Additionally, there is a risk that the holder may not stay firmly in the vent, become unstable, or even fall out.
Phone holder on the dashboard – The holder is attached directly to the dashboard. Not all types of dashboards are suitable for this type of attachment. Remember that the holder must not obstruct the view through the windshield. If you do not use the holder regularly, a glued version may not be ideal for you.
Phone holder on the windshield – The holder is attached to the windshield, ideally at eye level. Again, it must not obstruct your view, as doing so could result in a fine.
Phone holder on the headrest – Some holders are designed to attach to the back of a seat’s headrest. These are usually larger holders suitable for bigger phones or tablets. This type of holder is especially useful when traveling with children, allowing them to be entertained during the ride, for example, with a story.
Types of Holder Mounts
Once you decide where to place the holder in your car, you also need to choose the type of mount. There are two main types – mechanical or magnetic.
Mechanical mount – The holder consists of two or four mechanical clamps that can be extended and adjusted to the size of the phone. The disadvantage is that both hands are required to operate it, so the phone must be placed in the holder before driving. However, the phone is held securely, with no risk of falling out.
Mechanical holder with a sensor – Some mechanical holders are equipped with a sensor that simplifies operation. When the phone approaches the holder, the clamps automatically open and adjust to its dimensions. This can be done easily with one hand.
Holder with wireless charging – Some car holders feature wireless charging, allowing the phone to charge while driving. This function is available only for devices that support wireless charging.
Magnetic mount – A magnetic plate must be attached to the phone or its case. The holder itself is also equipped with a magnet, so the phone can be easily attached. If the phone shifts or adhesion decreases, the plate should be cleaned of dust. The disadvantage of a magnetic holder is that attaching the plate to the device or case may not be suitable for everyone.
